SHANGHAI: M&C Saatchi has gained a China foothold, opening an office in Shanghai on the back of established clients British Airways, Qantas and BMW and product launches for Coca-Cola and Revlon.

The Shanghai operation – M&C’s sixth in the region – is initially being headed up by M&C Hong Kong chief executive officer Ian Thubron and general manager Janice Chan.

Chan said: “We’ll review the situation after six months to ascertain the best way forward. However, I am sure we will have a dedicated Shanghai chief quite soon.”

The office has seven creatives and account handlers. All the Shanghai-based staff have been recruited locally, which M&C Worldwide chairman James Lowther described as “crucially important”. Lowther added: “The general theme today is localisation. If you are looking for human insights to connect with people, local staff are the ones who will do it.”
